FAQ

The CUACA Education Fund - FAQ

Q. What Is the CUACA Education Fund?

The CUACA Education Fund is a private trust established in 2009 for the accumulation and disbursement of financial contributions (in UK Sterling) for the benefit of deserving students among the African and Caribbean Undergraduate community at the University of Cambridge.

Q. Does the CUACA Education Fund provide financial support for other students?

In the short term, the Education Fund will primarily provide support for Undergraduate Students (Home or Overseas) at the University of Cambridge. Depending on the speed at which the fund accumulates, the plan is to first expand coverage to Graduate students and then potentially outwards to other Universities. There are also ideas around improving access to redbrick UK universities and assisting promising students in their final years of secondary school.

Q. How Can I Support the Education Fund?

Financial contributions are accepted online. Click here to access our Online Giving pages. You can also contact us directly for our bank account details. We respectfully ask for minimum donations of £25.
You can also help in the following ways:
  • Spread the word! Tell as many people as you can, we can never have too many fund raisers!
  • Become a Member of the Alumni Society; help us build an extensive and strong network of African and Caribbean Alumni.
  • Volunteer! We can use your support for our mentoring program. Are you able to offer an internship of between two to six weeks? What about work-shadowing opportunities for recent graduates or current students? Do you have skills that could help students prepare for interviews or complete their job applications? Please let us know!

Q. Can I support the fund directly through the University's Online Giving pages?

The easiest way to support the Education Fund is through our donation pages. In some cases, where your gift is greater than £1,000, you may be able to take advantage of the University's Gift Aid program through their Giving Pages. However, it is important that you contact us prior to making such any gifts as you will need a Fund Code to ensure that your donation reaches the CUACA Student Support account.

Q. Can I Claim Matched Giving or Tax Benefits from My Donation?

The CUACA Education Fund is currently in the accumulation phase, and so does not qualify for the tax and matched giving benefits currently available to Charitable Trusts and Charities. We'll post updates to this site and to our members via the newsletter as soon as this changes.

Q. Is the Society or the Education Fund a Registered Charity?

The CUACA Society is an unincorporated association limited by guarantee; the CUACA Education Fund is currently in the accumulation or inital fundraising phase. The UK Charities Commission requires total assets of at least £5k GBP before an association can apply for charitable status. It is our intention to make this application as soon as we reach this financial milestone. We will of course keep you updated on the status of our application. You can help us reach this milestone more quickly by spreading the word and encouraging other alumni, friends and family to make a contribution to the Fund.
